Millennials are eventually going to move back to the suburbs. Most of us probably cringe at the idea. The sameness is at odds with the diversity of experience that we’ve grown accustomed to.
But we’re not as unique as we think we are, and that’s okay. It will make for an easier transition.
A Retail Renaissance
There’s no reason we can’t remake the suburbs in our image. Every chain restaurant could become a food hall with fast casual restaurants and donut walls. Every Home Depot a collection of specialty shops, selling Edison bulbs and dark green plants.
We could install murals and solid pink walls on every home and business, so we’re never at a loss for new Instagram backdrops. Of course, we’ll still occasionally travel for our best content, but at least we’ll stay relevant in the meantime.
#FollowMeToTheBurbs
There’s a lot to be excited about. Our vaguely defined Internet jobs may be fully remote soon, and if not, the transition away from Boomer consumers and big box stores makes for great small business opportunities.
So next time you’re taking a picture of your food while everyone else is waiting to eat, remember that won’t be your last Millennial grace.
There will be plenty more brunch after this.
